What “Old Abe” represents
The sculpture is based on Old Abe, a real bald eagle that became the famous mascot of a Union regiment during the American Civil War.
Old Abe traveled with the 8th Wisconsin Infantry
He became a symbol of Union pride and morale
After the war, he was considered a national Civil War icon
Barnum turned that story into a detailed pewter sculpture, usually showing:
The eagle perched above or near soldiers
Civil War equipment and battlefield elements
A dramatic, patriotic composition
